D'architectures : Numéro 256

The September issue of the magazine architectures is interested in housing. Also findthe drawing of Martin Étienne, the Quesaco, pages devoted to the work of photographers Anne and Patrick Poirier, a building of 105 homes of Josep Lluis Mateo in Toulouse, a mixed operation of Nasrine Seraji in Rheu, etc.

EDITORIAL - Laborer

Far from the great prestigious projects, the construction of collective dwellings remains, despite the normative frenzy that bridles them, the preferred ground of the architects. Proper housing design requires laborious work, producing effects that are hardly perceptible to the neophyte but determinant for those who will live there. We are discovering more and more interesting transactions, and it is difficult to choose which one we will present and publish or not. It is true that, under the yoke of the regulatory shackles, they struggle to leave conventions. However, some architects succeed in reformulating imposed postulates, whether financial, programmatic or constructive, by tenacity. But we need a condition that we have observed almost systematically: good projects are born in neighborhoods where urban planning is mastered by a coordinating architect. Without direction - and in spite of the heroic resistance of the CAUE -, countryside, boroughs and medium-sized towns remain, with some meritorious exceptions, a territory of desolation for architecture. If one tries to be optimistic, one will be pleased that the private promotion, which develops on the ruins of a control of public work more and more exsangue, timidly opens up to the architecture, even accession to the property. She discovers that modernity is selling, and often very well. But contrary to what one might have hoped, when she finds herself in the front line against the dictates of autocrat mayors of good taste, she has no more weight than the architects. A worrying phenomenon, the theme of our survey next month.
